New Canon eos 5D mark IV
Canon eos 5D mark IV
There is no doubt that the Canon 5D series is one of the reference SLR cameras for many professional photographers, photojournalists and enthusiasts looking for a very complete camera with great features.
Its renovation is not done frequently because it is an advanced equipment, so when the time comes for the relay with the recent Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
We can expect the incorporation of latest technologies and continue polishing a model that is difficult to throw something at fault.
Much in favor of Canon with this model where it puts all its dedication to be taking over the professional SLR market. For this new Mark IV Canon has wanted to add new technologies that today are widespread and that will facilitate the work of the photographer. Does it really comply? Is your investment worth a higher price than previous models? We were able to test it for a few days to extract some ratings.
We must start from the fact that we expect a lot from this model, but it is foreseeable that it will not disappoint us, since it is a consolidated range and that it sells a lot and well. Therefore, Canon has not modified its essential scheme with this model. It is a camera with a continuous design, as well as its concept. Just change incorporating some news to remain a solid, serious and fulfilling camera.
In this section few news we can highlight beyond something purely anecdotal as its new weight (just 60 g less) and practically the same dimensions, something that is almost negligible. Although by the sensations in hands, mainly transmitted by users of the Mark III, they appreciated it something lighter.
We found an adjustment button of AF modes that is appreciated by facilitating the task of controlling it, a rear screen that also maintains dimensions but now with improved resolution to reach up to 1.62 million points, several very personalized options and, above all , now has touch control.
An outstanding novelty that might not have much relevance in such a range, but that with practice is proven to be extremely useful on many occasions and that greatly facilitates navigation through the menus, up to something as simple as the enlargement or passing of the images captured, as we usually do on smartphones or tablets. It is something intuitive and it is well integrated.
Did anyone say flip screen? To incorporate a better screen, due to resolution and tactile capacity, it seems that it almost cries out to be foldable, as are lower Canon models and that they are very practical especially for captures in difficult positions and, let’s say, almost essential for Video capture
However, it must be concluded that it is a solid and robust camera, which conveys that feeling as soon as you hold it in your hand. Its body is made of magnesium alloy and is sealed, a construction guarantee that can be a value to take into account. Despite its size and weight, it is a camera that has achieved a perfect balance with its ergonomics, thanks to a grip achieved and ideal for any size of hands. And, of course, it has a great balance when we accompany it with a heavy and spectacular optics. And without losing some lightness when we “fit” a light 50 mm being a very manageable equipment.
It was expected that the resolution of the sensor would increase to maintain the degree of competitiveness. As has been the case offering 30.4 megapixels. A resolution that seems right to us, to offer something manageable for report photography. If someone wants a higher resolution, Canon already offers two models that reach 50 megapixels.
The new sensor also brings improvements in color depth and dynamic range, which improves the results, especially when combined with some of the high-end lenses for this mount.
Another of the most striking novelties of the 5D Mark IV is the incorporation of Dual Pixel technology, which, once activated in the menu, makes a double capture in order to fine-tune in the post-processed adjustments such as improving focus, bokeh or parasitic lights Of course, for now, these adjustment options can only be made with the manufacturer-specific software, the Canon Digital Photo Professional. For everything else, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom that support the Mark IV files can now be used.
And yes, this small adjustment seems useful, although we believe that many of the users of this camera will be left over. So the Dual Pixel is something that has yet to grow and continue to offer greater solutions. It is not something differential that serves to highlight this model, although any improvement like this will always be welcome when you pay what this model is worth.
In the focus section we can only confirm that Canon has continued to substantially improve the previous model, due in large measure to the Dual Pixel AF, which manages to improve its quality and speed, as well as new algorithms that allow a very precise tracking approach.
This together with an improved burst, up to 7 fps, make it a camera that performs very well in action and sports scenes. It is not a specific model but it does solve many situations where speed becomes necessary and the response is very good.
As for the performance of the sensor, it can only be said that it does not surprise us, it continues its good work in all kinds of situations and, now, with a higher resolution, it allows us to make a cut without losing too much. As for its behavior is brilliant, especially coupled with its powerful processor and its fast autofocus, make it the camera you always want to have to solve any job. The one that comes out of any scene and always gives us the height.
It can be nuanced, such as the fact that although it has improved its behavior at high sensitivities and, even with more pixels, it seems to us that it is still below competitive models. Although only in really high values, which for many will not be of habitual use. However, reaching up to 12,800 ISO maintains a decent level of detail and little loss of hue. Above, it allows us to select more values but in which a more noticeable loss is already appreciated and is less usable for the most demanding image quality.
But even in the performance of the sensor we find the continuous line of Canon, since this model offers a natural color response very similar to the rest of the brand’s models, something that is noticeable in the RAW files, compared to the JPEGs of Great quality, but always more saturated with color.
In video we find the arrival of 4K (4K DCI format of 4,096 × 2,160 pixels to be exact, that is, with a cut in the image of 1.64x), something that had not been incorporated would have placed it below what was expected for many. 4K is increasingly demanded by users and Canon includes it, with some nuance that everyone will not like, but there it is for those who need it. Something interesting and curious, is that thanks to the touch capability of the screen, we can not only control the focus point during recording but can vary from 4K to Full HD during it. Thus offering the possibility of reaching up to 60 fps and 120 fps if we stay with 720p.
Two options that come as a novelty and that we value very positively are the integrated GPS and wireless connectivity. As for the GPS, it indicates that it works correctly, that the connection interval time can be configured (so that the battery does not suffer in excess) and with the tests performed it has been successful in practically all locations (although some have erred, we do not know if due to the
integrated module itself or due to a lack of coverage). Of course, it consumes a lot of battery, so we advise to activate it only when it is really necessary.
Something similar happens with wireless connectivity, with integrated NFC technology as well as Wi-Fi, which works really well and comfortably with its corresponding official application. It allows us to remotely shoot and copy the captured images quickly. In the same way, if we keep it always connected we will notice a shorter battery life.
The Mark IV is the great camera that was expected. A professional camera mostly, very complete, serious, that resolves very well and with options to defend themselves comfortably in any situation and scene. It is one of the cameras preferred by photojournalists and photographers precisely because it is a robust camera, manageable and with a high overall quality.
You can’t fault your improved focus, your increased resolution, or your overall performance. Although perhaps those who expected a little more in the video section do notice less enthusiasm, especially for its price. In any case, it is a very well compensated camera, which incorporates some novelties that are really useful and that today are almost indispensable for many professionals, such as GPS or Wi-Fi, and others, such as the touch capability is welcome because it completes very well and greatly improves its handling.
Of course, it is a pity that the screen is not collapsible, we believe it was a solution that is not at odds with maintaining the robustness and solidity of the body and, surely, many would have appreciated it.
However, we must recognize that many were waiting for the arrival of this new model, that Canon has its loyal customers and that the Mark IV offers much of what was expected, without major surprises, but with a result of quality and, together , a very well compensated team. The price would be the only thing we really see can raise more doubts in the purchase decision. A higher price than expected (3,999 euros) and higher than its previous model, is something that will make you think a lot. And more having an increasingly fierce competition, where with previous models almost reigned comfortably.
